Congleton is a small town of approximately 22,700 inhabitants, located in the county of Cheshire. It is thought that the town was originally a Roman settlement, though the town was first officially recorded in 1272, when it was granted a charter to hold a markets and fairs. The town later developed mills, and became an important site of textile production, specialising in lace. The town was also a large manufacturer of leather goods. The town was also a popular site for the sport of bear-bating. When the town�s bear became old, it no longer pulled in crowds, and so the town paid for a new bear out of money saved for a bible, which was purchased later with funds raised by increased crowds. This story later became corrupted, with the rumour in the local villages being that the town had sold the bible to pay. The town now manufactures golf balls and air bags, though it is primarily a dormitory town for nearby Manchester. The nearest driving theory test centre to Congleton is located 10 miles away in Stoke-on-Trent, 15 minutes away by rail. The town has a practical test centre, situated on West Street.
