Ellesmere Port is a Cheshire industrial town with a population of approximately 64,000. It is situated at the southern end of the Wirral peninsula, across the Mersey from Liverpool. As its name suggests, it was originally created as an outlet to the sea serving traffic from Ellesmere in Shropshire. The two towns are connected by the Llangollen Canal (formerly the Ellesmere Canal). Today Ellesmere Port is primarily industrial, dominated by a Shell oil refinery and an ICI chemical works. It is also home to a Vauxhall Motors plant, renowned for its production of the Astra range of cars. Learner drivers in this part of Cheshire are well served by a number of respected local driving schools. Ellesmere Port has its own DSA driving test centre which can be found on Chester Road in the Whitby area of town. It recorded a healthy pass rate of 51.1% for the year 2004-5.
