Falmouth is a south coast seaport in South West Cornwall. Renowned for its harbour - the third largest natural harbour in the world - it has been the start/finish point for numerous yacht races and record-breaking round-the-world voyages, including those made by Sir Francis Chichester and Dame Ellen MacArthur. The town has several other claims to fame: the news of Britain's victory at Trafalgar was landed there, and it was later the launching point for a commando raid on St Nazaire during World War Two. The coming of the railways brought considerable prosperity to Falmouth as the town became more accessible to tourists. It now operates primarily as a holiday resort, with local maritime activity much declined from its heyday.
