Harwich is a town in the county of Essex, with a population of over 9,300. The town dates from the mid-12th century, and grew thanks to the port of Harwich, and the smaller ferry terminal of Parkeston, which has a regular ferry service to Hoek van Holland. The town was once a base for several Royal Navy ships, though the navy no longer has a presence there. Harwich oversees the port of Felixstowe in addition, making the town particularly important. The main exports through the port are containerised goods, though a number of other imports and exports are handled. In late 2005, the Government approved a plan to build a new container terminal in nearby Bathside Bay. Harwich is one of the earliest purpose-built cinemas to survive with many of its original furnishings, as well as its original projection room. The nearest theory test centre to Harwich is in the city of Colchester, approximately 20 miles from the town, or a 40 minute train journey. The nearest practical test centre is also located in Colchester.
