Launceston is a town in Cornwall, in the south West of the UK. Its population is approximately 7000. Launceston is known as the 'Gateway to Cornwall' due to its proximity to the Devon border - just 4 miles along the A30. The town grew around a castle built in the 11th century by Henry III. Launceston was the site of a battle between Royalist and Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War in 1643. The town was once the capital of Cornwall, however that title has since passed to Bodmin. The town has recently seen a lot of development on its outskirts, to the detriment of its town centre which has seen some decline. Launceston's nearest theory test centre is in Plymouth, approximately 20 miles away, however the town does have its own practical test centre, which is on the outskirts of the town, close to the A30.
