Macclesfield is a town of approximately 69,000 inhabitants. It is in the county of Cheshire, and lies on the River Bollin, close to the edge of the peak district. Macclesfield was granted a royal charter in the 13th century. In the 18th century, Charles Stuart marched through the town, and the mayor of Macclesfield was reluctantly forced to welcome him – a scene depicted in a silk tapestry of the town. Macclesfield was one of the world largest producers of finished silk; though the town’s former mills are now museums with silk tapestries on display. Macclesfield is the home of Hovis bread, and the furniture manufacturer Arighi Bianchi. Despite its population, Macclesfield lacks a number of amenities and attractions such as cinemas and theatres. The town lies on the West Coast Main Line between Manchester and London, and sees regular trains between the two cities. The nearest theory test centre to Macclesfield is located in Stockport (a short rail journey away), though Macclesfield does have its own practical test centre, located on Bridge Street, in the centre of the town.
