Matlock is a small town in the county of Derbyshire. Historically, it has been a spa town, which formerly prospered from both hydrotherapy, and a number of mills which used the waters to power machinery. The town at one stage had more than 20 hydros, the largest of which closed in the 1950’s, and is now the headquarters of Derbyshire County Council. The town also had a cable car system inspired by the similar system in San Francisco, though it closed in 1927 as it lost out to bus and car transportation, however the tram shed still stands in Hall Leys Park, home to the UK’s oldest fleet of motorboats, as well as a traditional band stand and miniature railway. Matlock has neither a theory test centre, nor a practical test centre in the town. The nearest centres both being located in Chesterfield, approximately 5 miles away.
