Monmouth is a small town with a population of under 9,000 inhabitants. It is county town of Monmouthshire, in Wales. The town has its history in the Roman occupation of Britain, when it was known as Blestium. A castle was built in the 11th century, which offered excellent views of the surrounding area. Later, in the 13th century, a fortified bridge was built. This bridge still stands today, and is the only remaining example of such a bridge in the UK. Until 2004, the bridge was the only passage across the river Monnow, though a replacement was finally built, allowing the historic bridge to be pedestrianised. The new bridge required the demolition of the Monmouth cattle market, which has caused a decline in the cattle trade in the town; though a weekly farmers market is still held. The closest driving theory test centre to Monmouth is located approximately 20 miles away in Hereford. The town does have a practical test centre, which is situated on Old Dixon Road.
