Newmarket is a town in the county of Suffolk, with a population of approximately 15,000. The town is known mostly for its horse racing history, which dates to 1194; making it the earliest known post-classical racecourse. King Charles I inaugurated the first cup race there, and in 1967, Queen Elizabeth II opened the National Stud, a breeding centre for Throughbred horses. The famous bloodstock auctioneers, Tattersalls, are located in the town; and their sale days are attended by several big names from the racing world. So big is the horse tradition that special routes have been established to move horses safely to �the Gallops�, a hill overlooking the town which is used for training the animals� stamina. It is estimated that 2000 horses live in Newmarket, with 1-in-4 jobs in the town being connected to horse racing. The town has two convenient theory test centres, approximately 10 miles away, one in Cambridge and one in Bury St Edmunds. There are also practical test centres in the same towns. There are two in Cambridge, at Chesterton Road and Cowley Road, and a single centre in Bury St Edmunds.
