Peterborough is a city in the county of Cambridgeshire. It has an estimated population of approximately 165,000 as of 2005. The Romans initially set up a fort in the area, around which the town of Durobrivae grew. The town later became known as Peterborough. Throughout the middle ages, the towns main industry was weaving and wool combing, and fairs celebrating this still exist in the town despite it no longer being involved in weaving. The town later became an important railway hub, when the east coast main line was built through the town. Many routes converge upon the town, from London, Cambridge, Manchester, Stansted Airport, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Lincoln, Liverpool and Nottingham. Today, the town is designated a ‘New Town’, formed to alleviate pressure on housing in London. Thus new suburbs have been built, and the town centre has been extensively redeveloped. Peterborough has both a practical and a theory test centre. The theory test centre is located on Broadway, half a mile from the railway station. The practical centre is located on the Westwood estate, off Saville Road.
