Ramsgate is a seaside resort on the Island of Thanet, in the county of Kent. It has an estimated population of approximately 40,000. The town grew around Ramsgate harbour, which was constructed form 1749. It wasn’t officially completed until 1850, and has the distinction of being the only Royal harbour in the UK; a distinction granted by King George VI after a visit with the Royal Yacht Squadron. Today, the harbour is one of the largest on the south coast, and sees regular ferry services to Ostend in Belgium. The town has a proud maritime history, and is particularly proud of its lifeboats, which have helped many stricken boats when they have run aground on the treacherous Goodwin Sands. The town’s closest theory test centre is located in Canterbury, 20 miles away, or approximately 20 minutes by train. The closest practical test centre is a short distance away, in Broadstairs.
