Reading is a town of approximately 144,000 inhabitants, located in the town of Berkshire, on the River Kennet. Reading was originally founded by the Saxons in the eighth century, by the Saxons, and was later occupied by the Vikings, and had a population of 600 by the time of the Doomsday book. The town grew rich on the cloth trade, and by the end of the 16th century had a population of over 6000. After the English Civil War, taxes levied upon the town destroyed the cloth industry, and so Reading reverted to a traditional market town, though it did have some industrial interests still, most notably in brewing. The towns location on several Turnpikes, the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal helped trade, and Reading slowly became a manufacturing town once again. The town later became a major railway hub, and today it is still a major junction on the Great Western Main Line. Reading is home to both a theory test and a practical test centre. The theory test centre is located on Kings Road, just under a mile from Reading railway station. The practical test centre is situated on Elgar Road South.
