Ringwood is a town situated in the county of Hampshire, upon the River Avon. The town has been involved in the nearby battle of Sedgemoor, as James, Duke of Monmouth was imprisoned in the town, in what is now Monmouth House, on West Street. Two runaways from the battle sought refuge in the town, in the house of the elderly Alice Lisle. Her home, Moyles Court, was raided, and Alice Lisle was sentenced to be burnt at the Stake. This sentence was later downgraded to beheading. There is a pub near to Moyles Court named after her. Today, the town of Ringwood is mainly a commuter town for the nearby cities of Portsmouth, Southampton, Poole and Bournemouth. Ringwood has neither a driving theory test centre, nor a practical test centre. The nearest centres are a short distance away, in Bournemouth, about 10 miles away. Practical centres are also located in Southampton and Poole.
