Rotherham is a town in the county of South Yorkshire, with a population of approximately 248,000. The town lies on the River Don, close to the confluence of the Don and the Rother rivers. Settlements in the area date from the iron ages, though the actual town of Rotherham wasn’t settled until the early middle ages. It soon became an important Saxon market town, thanks to its position close to a Roman road. The region had been exploited for iron since the Roman times, but with the discovery of rich seams of coal in the area, the industrial revolution came to Rotherham, with iron being the major product of the town. Rotherham iron, and later steel, was highly regarded for its strength. At the industry’s peak, over 1.8 million tonnes of steel were produced by one single steelworks – Templeborough, which closed in 1993. Today, the iron and steel industry has seen massive decline, which has led to unemployment in the town. This is no longer a massive problem, however, thanks to urban regeneration. Rotherham has no driving theory test centre. The closest is located 5 miles away, in Sheffield. The town does have a practical test centre, however, and this is located on Doncaster Road.
