Runcorn is an industrial town in the county of Cheshire, with a population of over 61,300 inhabitants. The town was first mentioned in 915 AD, when a fortification was built here to protect the north from Viking invasion. Runcorn itself was not mentioned in the Domesday Book, though several villages in the surrounding area were. The castle was later rebuilt as a Motte and Bailey type, to watch over the plains of Lancashire and Cheshire. The remains of the castle are still visible. Runcorn today consists of two parts � the old town, and the new town. The old town was built around the Bridgwater canal during the industrial revolution, with the new town being built in the 1960s to alleviate housing pressure on Liverpool. The town is heavily involved in chemical production, as well as the refining of oil. These two industries still employ a number in the town, and the chemical plants and oil refinery dominate the skyline in the area. The town has a driving theory test centre, situated at Whitworth Court, on Manor Farm Road. The nearest practical test centre is located across the River Mersey, in the town of Widnes.
