Sheerness is a town in the county of Kent, situated on the Isle of Sheppey. The town has an approximate population of 20,000 inhabitants. The town is most known for a Dutch naval attack off the coast, which resulted in the town being occupied by the Dutch for a short time. The town was so impressed by the conduct of the Dutch, who paid for their dinner in the town, that the Dutch Marine Corps were invited back for a dinner on the 300th anniversary of the battle. The town was also site of a Royal dockyard during the Tudor and Stuart eras. HMS Osprey, built there in 1878, is today being restored in Chatham. The railways came to Sheerness in 1860, aiding the development of the town. The town sees regular services to nearby Sittingbourne, from where connections to London can be made. Sheerness has no driving test centres. The closest theory test centre is located in Chatham, about 20 miles away. The closest practical test centre is located in Gillingham, approximately 18 miles away.
