Slough is a large town in the county of Berkshire, close to Greater London. The town is an amalgamation of villages along the A4 (the Great West Road) from London towards Bath and Bristol. The name was originally recorded as ‘Slo’, before becoming ‘Sloo’, ‘Slowe’, and finally the current ‘Slough’, thanks to the number of wetlands (or sloughs) in the region. The town grew as pubs and inns developed in the town, serving the needs of the many travellers passing through. In the 19th century, the railway and canal came to Slough, bringing with it development and industry. Brick making became a major industry in the town, and later, the lands around the town were used to store WWI vehicles once they returned from the battlefield. The area became the ‘Slough Trading Estate’ once engineers began to work on the vehicles, and the estate was made famous by the BBC comedy series ‘The Office’. Today, Slough is a major commuter town for London and for the large workforce at nearby Heathrow Airport. Slough has both a theory and a practical test centre. The theory centre is situated less than 400m from the railway station. The practical test centre is located on Grays Place, which is a short distance from the theory centre.
