Southport is a seaside town of 93,000 inhabitants, located in the county of Merseyside. The town in its present form was founded by William Sutton in 1798, though settlement in the area had been in existence for much longer than this, notably the north of the town around St Cuthbert’s Church, which was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Southport grew, like many other seaside resorts, during the 19th century, when it gained the reputation of being much more refined than its neighbour to the north, Blackpool. Today the town is still known for being quite refined, and is still a popular resort in the summer. There is a Pontin’s holiday camp a short distance out of the town, which brings in a number of tourists, and attractions in the town include the UK’s longest overland pier and the Pleasureland theme park. There are also annual events which bring in tourism to the town, including the Southport flower show, and a jazz festival. Southport is home to both a theory and a practical test centre. The theory centre is situated on Leicester Street, half a mile from the railway station. The practical test centre is located on Eastbank Steet.
