St Austell is a town in the county of Cornwall, with a population of 21,500 inhabitants, giving it the largest single-town population in Cornwall. The town was first referenced by Henry VIII, when the town was just a small village. However, during the 19th and 20th centuries, the town expanded due to the nearby clay mining industry, which attracted many families to the area in search of work. The clay industry caused the river through the town to be nicknamed “White River� due to the waste water from the clay industry being drained into the river. Today, the clay mining industry has declined, to the detriment of the local economy, though it still employs approximately 3000 people from the town. St Austell is now largely a service town, with a number of shops and services to serve the local community. Many of the population in the area are now employed in these shops and businesses. The town also has a brewery, famous for brewing ‘St Austell Pride’, their flagship ale. St Austell has neither a practical nor a theory test centre. The closest theory test centre is located in Truro, approximately 20 miles away, or a rail journey of 15-20 minutes. The nearest practical test centre is located approximately 15 miles away, in Bodmin.
