Stevenage is a town in the English county of Hertfordshire, with a population of approximately 80,000 inhabitants. The present site of Stevenage lies on a Roman Road between Verulamium (close to St Albans) to Baldock. The town grew slightly through the middle ages, and saw a significant increase in population when the railways arrived in the town. However, it was mainly in the 1950s and 1960s that Stevenage grew, following its designation as a ‘New Town’ in 1946. As a result, plenty of housing was built, to alleviate pressure on London, and services were set up for the people moving in to them. The town boasts the first pedestrianised shopping centre in the UK. Like other New Towns, Stevenage is simple to get around, with roundabouts allowing better traffic flow. However, it is also said to lack character due to the nature of its construction. The town lies on the East Coast Main Line, between London and Edinburgh, and sees regular express trains between the two capitals, as well as frequent stopping trains between London, Hitchin, and Cambridge. Stevenage has both a theory and a practical test centre. The theory test centre is located on St Georges Way, half a mile from the main rail station. The practical centre is located at 3 Drapers Way.
