Taunton is the county town of Somerset, in the south west of England. The town has a population of just over 45,000 inhabitants. The name Taunton comes from the River Tone, upon which the town is situated � i.e. �Tone Town�. In 700 AD, a castle was built here by King Ine of Wessex. A monastery was later built, and the town was granted a market charter in 904; the market is still held every week. Taunton was known for its woollen products, which it traded on the markets, however, when the industry declined, silk weaving was introduced to the town instead, at the end of the 18th century. Close by the town are a number of pillboxes, which formed part of the Taunton Stop Line, which was put in place during WWII to prevent German invasion from the West Coast. Taunton has both a theory and a practical test centre. The theory test centre is located in Victoria House, on Victoria Street, approximately a mile from the railway station. The towns practical test centre is situated on Cooks Way, on the Bindon Business Park.
