Telford is a large town in the county of Shropshire, with a population of approximately 138,000 inhabitants. It is a planned town, named after Thomas Telford, a Scottish Industrialist, who was the surveyor of public works in the county. The town was built in the 1960s and 1970s as a �new town�, on the site of several former coal mines. Telford enveloped a number of existing villages, as well as the scenic Ironbridge Gorge. A new shopping centre was built in the town centre of the new town. Originally, the target was for the town to have a population of over 250,000 inhabitants by the year 2000, though this was later curtailed when it was deemed to be too optimistic. The town has attracted a number of hi-tech companies, whom provide employment for many of the towns inhabitants. The nearest driving theory test centre to Telford is located in Shrewsbury, approximately 10 miles away, or a train journey of about 20 minutes. The town has a practical test centre, situated at 35 Horton Wood.
