Thornbury is an historic market town in South Gloucestershire. The town has a population of approximately 12,000 inhabitants. It is thought that thornbury has existed since the Bronze Age, though its first recorded reference was in the 9th century. The town was granted a charter in 1252, and held markets in the Market Hall and High Street, though it moved to Rock Street in 1911. In the 1990s, the market was shut down, though a much smaller market was allowed to take place in the car park of the United Reformed Church. The old site is now derelict, while the old Market Hall is now a clothes shop. The town has benefited from the building of a bypass, which allows heavy traffic to avoid the steep hill in the centre of the town. The town has a number of shops along the high street, and in the St. Mary’s Shopping Centre. The closest theory and practical test centres to Thornbury are both situated in Bristol, approximately 11 miles away.
