Trowbridge is a town of approximately 28,000 inhabitants, located in the county of Wiltshire. The town lies on the River Biss. There is evidence of the land around Trowbridge being farmed as early as 3000 years ago, though it was not until the 10th century, and with a later entry on the Domesday Book that written proof of Trowbridge came into existence. From the 13th century, the town developed a clothing industry that became more industrialised from the 17th century. At one point, the town was nicknamed the ‘Manchester of the West’, as it had 15 factories, comparable to several northern industrial towns. The wool industry began to decline in the late 19th century, and this trend continued well into the 20th century. The last mill in Trowbridge closed in 1982, and is now a museum dedicated to the history of the town and its former industries. The town attained brief notoriety in 2000, when a local district councillor claimed Trowbridge was “just like Ibiza�; which drew widespread surprise, as the councillor had never visited Ibiza. Several residents began to suspect he had never been to Trowbridge, either! Trowbridge doesn’t have a theory test centre; the closest is instead situated in Bath, about 15 miles away, or a rail journey of between 15 and 25 minutes. The town has a practical test centre, located on Wiltshire drive.
