Truro is the only city in the county of Cornwall, with a population of approximately 17,500. There is evidence nearby of settlement in the area from at least the Iron Age. The town rose to prominence as a market town and a port during the 19th and 20th centuries. Tin mining was also an important industry nearby, employing many local residents. However, with the decline of the tin mining and fishing industries, the role of Truro changed to a commercial and cultural city rather than an industrial one. The town has recently suffered from flooding, and so flood defences have recently been strengthened in the town, with an emergency dam and a tidal barrier being built to prevent future flooding. The town lies on the Great Western Main Line between London and Penzance, and additionally sees some services between Penzance and Scotland. Truro has a driving theory test centre, situated on Quay Street, approximately a mile from the railway station. The town also has no practical test centre; the nearest being located approximately 20 miles away, in Camborne.
