Tynemouth is an historic seaside resort in the county of Tyne and Wear. The town has a population of approximately 60,000 inhabitants. As the name suggests, the town lies at the mouth of the River Tyne, opposite South Shields. The town has been settled since the Iron Ages, thanks to its easily defensible location. The castle was very popular with the wives of Kings who travelled on campaigns in Scotland. King Edward III reckoned Tynemouth Castle was one of the strongest in the northern marches. Tynemouth priory stands next to the remains of the castle, and is one of the finest early English compositions in the country. More recently, Tynemouth has become a popular seaside resort. Several notable people have stayed here, including the authors Lewis Carroll and Charles Dickens. Though the town is no longer a popular seaside resort, a large number of people still live and work in the town, many either commuting to nearby Newcastle-upon-Tyne, or working in the service industry in the town. The nearest driving theory test centre is located in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, approximately 7 miles away, or a 20 minute metro ride. The nearest practical test centre is also located in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in the suburb of Longbenton.
