Walsall is an industrial town with a population of 178,600, though with a total population of 250,000 in the surrounding borough. The name Walsall is thought to date from Celtic times, when it was named ‘Walh Halh’, meaning ‘valley of the foreigners’. A weekly market commenced in the town in 1220, and from this Walsall grew through a number of different trades; at one point being known as ‘the town of a thousand trades’. Like many towns, Walsall was changed massively during the industrial revolution, with the population swelling from 2000 in the 16th century, to over 86,000 within 200 years. In 1847, Walsall became connected to the railway network, which helped the town expand even further. The primary industries in Walsall at this time were mainly coal mining and metalworking, though when the coal mines dried up, Walsall changed direction, and branched out into leather and leather goods; saddles and handbags most notably. Other industries in Walsall include small-scale metalworking and precision engineering, iron and brass founding and plastics. The town has no driving theory test centre, though there are two convenient centres. Wolverhampton and Sutton Coldfield are both about 10 miles away, however Wolverhampton is probably more convenient as it can be reached by train from Walsall. Wolverhampton and Sutton Coldfield are also home to the closest practical test centres.
