Warrington is a large town in the county of Cheshire, with a population of approximately 191,000. The town was founded in Roman Times, when it was a bridging point on the River Mersey, used by the Romans to move north from their base in Deva (modern Chester). The town was also an important location in the English Civil War, with battle being fought nearby. These battles said to be responsible for the dents in the walls of the Parish Church in the town. The town later became an important industrial town, producing steel, textiles and chemicals among other products. During the decline in heavy industries in the town, Warrington was designated a ‘New Town’ which helped spur redevelopment in the town. Service industries and hi-tech industries replaced many of the heavy industries, though some remain, including the Unilever soap works. In 1993, the IRA detonated a bomb in the centre of the town, killing two children, which attracted widespread criticism of the group. The bomb also helped redevelop the centre of the town. Warrington does not have a driving theory test centre; the closest is instead located in Runcorn, approximately 5 miles away, or a rail journey of less than 10 minutes. The town does have a practical test centre, located on the Warrington Business Park on Long Lane.
