Weymouth is a popular seaside resort on the South coast, located in the county of Dorset. The town has a population of approximately 64,000 inhabitants. The town of Weymouth was became an established seaport in the 12th century, and was granted a Royal Charter in 1252. Since then, the town has expanded, thanks to King George III holidaying in Weymouth 14 times. The white chalk horse, on a hillside outside the town, was built to commemorate his visits. The holidaying King sparked a tourism boom in the town, and Weymouth has remained a popular tourist destination to this day, although the number of visitors today is much lower than Weymouth has previously enjoyed. The town was important during WWII, when a number of ships were based in Portland harbour. Weymouth’s Nothe Fort was also a key location during the D-day landings, and was used in development of the bouncing bomb. Today, the harbours are still important for the town, with a fishing fleet based there, in addition to a cross channel ferry, and a large marina which holds a number of yachts, cruisers and pleasure craft. The town has a driving theory test centre, located on Phoenix House, on St Nicholas Street, half a mile from Weymouth railway station. The nearest practical test centre is approximately 5 miles away, in Dorchester.
