Driving Schools in WinchesterWinchester

Winchester is a cathedral city in southern England, situated in the county of Hampshire. The city has a population of approximately 40,000 inhabitants. Settlement in the town dates to pre-Roman times, with evidence of several Iron Age hill forts being located around the town. Under the Romans, the city achieved considerable importance. From 529 AD, the city became capital of the ancient kingdom of Wessex, and was later established as the main city in the kingdom by King Alfred the Great in 819. The street layout as determined by Alfred is still in evidence today. The city later became an important coastal fort, one of a series along the south coast. After the Norman Conquest, Winchester declined as London was named capital. In 1141, a devastating fire in the city accelerated this decline even faster. The town briefly rejuvenated in the 14th century, as a new cathedral was built and several educational establishments were created. Wool trading also boomed in the city, but it didn’t last, and the city soon declined once again. Today, the town is a popular tourist destination, as it is home to the King Arthur’s famous Round Table, and it retains much of its Middle Aged architecture. The town is a popular commuter town for the towns of Southampton and Portsmouth, as well as the city of London, which is an hour away by rail. The nearest driving theory test centre is located in Southampton, approximately 10 miles away, or a rail journey of 25 minutes. The town does have a practical test centre, and this is located on Christchurch Road.
