Worksop is a town of approximately 40,000 inhabitants, situated in the county of Nottinghamshire. Worksop is known to have existed around the time of the Domesday Book, when it was known as Werchesope. This period of the town was humorously depicted in the children’s TV series ‘Maid Marian and her Merry Men’, which attracted a large cult following. In 1103, a castle and an Augustinian Priory were established in the town, and so the town grew into a market town which was granted a Royal Charter in 1296. For centuries, the towns market revolved around its local agricultural background, with the towns industries also being dependent on the agriculture – malting, milling and timberwork were all dependent on various aspects of the local farming. The building of a canal and the railway boosted Worksop’s fortunes, as it brought in trade, and when coal was discovered nearby, a sizeable workforce to work in the mines. The town expanded from just 3000 inhabitants in 1801, to almost 20,000 by 1901. Despite the coal industry declining, Worksop has remained industrial by attracting a number of alternative industries into the town, concentrating on electronics and light engineering. The nearest driving theory test to Worksop is approximately 15 miles away in Mansfield, a 30 minute train journey. The town does have a practical test centre, located on Slack Walk.
