Burnley is a traditional Lancashire mill town, located 25 miles northwest of Manchester in England's North West region. Its modern-day population can be estimated at about 75,000. Burnley derives its name from the local River Brun which provided essential water in the days when it was a small but thriving market town. It grew up as an industrial centre in the nineteenth century with its economy largely based on the textile industry (mainly cotton weaving), although coal mining and engineering also played their part. Today almost none of Burnley's mills, mines and engineering firms remain operational. The decline in industry has led to considerable unemployment and urban decay. Burnley received national attention in 2001 as a result of disturbances arising from racial tensions and social deprivation among its White and Asian communities.
