Bristol is a large city in South West England. An important seaport and trading centre since the 12th century, it stands on the River Avon and is separated from South Wales by a narrow stretch of water known as the Bristol Channel. Bristol enjoys a picturesque geographical location, close to Cheddar Gorge with the thickly wooded slopes of the Avon Gorge stretching almost into the heart of the city. Its best known landmark is the world-famous Clifton Suspension Bridge - designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel - which spans the width of the Gorge. Bristol achieved the pinnacle of its wealth and stature at the height of the transatlantic slave trade in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Rich local merchants were responsible for commissioning most of the elegant Georgian buildings that continue to dominate its attractive cityscape, although examples of medieval, Victorian and contemporary architecture can also be found. As the docks wound down in the late 19th century, Bristol started to transform itself into the industrial centre it is today. The area continues to attract considerable national and international investment. Home to a booming driving school culture, Bristol boasts three practical driving test centres, located in the Brislington, Southmead and St George districts of the city.
