The city is known for its three-spired cathedral, which was constructed between 1195 and the 1330�s. The actual city of Lichfield dates to 669, when it was mentioned in Bede�s history. In the middle ages, Lichfield produced woollen cloth and leather products. During the 18th century, Lichfield became something of an intellectual centre of activity, with a number of famous people living in the town, including Dr Samuel Johnson, who wrote the first English dictionary. The town�s main economic activity came from coaches, which would stop overnight. Inns and taverns were set up to support the coach users, though with the advent of the railway, the town saw some decline. The town has several light industries, including Armitage-Shanks bathroom products, and Arthur Price cutlery. The town is also a popular commuter town for Birmingham, which is 14 miles to the south. The nearest theory test centre to Lichfield is located in Stafford, approximately 15 miles away, or 15 minutes by rail. The town has its own practical test centre, located on Lower Sanford Street.
