Staines is a large town within Surrey, with a population of approximately 52,400 inhabitants. The town was formerly in the county of Middlesex; however it was transferred to Surrey when much of Middlesex became a part of Greater London. The name Staines is said t be derived from the Old English ‘Stones’, due to a site of monoliths in nearby Stanwell. The town has been inhabited since Roman times, when there was a bridge in the town across the Thames. The town expanded as a result of demand for inns and facilities for travellers, particularly in the middle ages. During the industrial revolution, the town became involved in production of linoleum, after the founding of the Linoleum Manufacturing Company in the town. The company was a major employer in the town right up until the 1960’s, when the business closed. The site of the factory is now the Two Rivers shopping centre. A statue dedicated to the linoleum factory workers can be found in the town. Today, Staines is mainly a commuter town for commuters into London, as well as Heathrow Airport. In addition to commuters, there are several large businesses in the town, set up thanks to the proximity to both London, and Heathrow Airport. These businesses include BUPA, LogicaCMG and Siemens. The town has its own driving theory test centre, located on Church Street, less than half a mile from the railway station. The nearest practical test centre is situated in Chertsey, approximately 5 miles away.
