Buxton is a well-known Derbyshire spa town, renowned as the gateway to the Peak District National Park. It enjoys an attractive geographical location, surrounded by mountains with the River Wye running through it. Buxton boasts a long and illustrious history as a spa town, with its rare geothermal spring rising at a constant temperature of 28C. The site upon which it lies was originally developed by the Romans, although it was not until the early 18th century that Buxton started to attract large numbers of visitors, as Victorians began to learn of the water's legendary healing properties. Buxton water can still be collected from its source at St Anne's Well close to the town centre. The spring continues to drive Buxton's economy; the town's bottled mineral water is sold worldwide and contributes to its booming tourist trade. The local driving schools supply a healthy turnover of candidates to the Buxton driving test centre at The Dairy on Green Lane.
