Downham Market (also known simply as Downham) is a small hillside market town, lying south of Kings Lynn on the edge of the fens. With a history dating back to Saxon times, Downham is one of the oldest towns in Norfolk. It was renowned for its butter market during the Middle Ages and provided a hiding place for King Charles I following the Battle of Naseby. Admiral Lord Nelson is reputed to have attended his first school in Downham Market. The town attracts significant numbers of daytrippers with its medieval Parish church and Victorian clocktower, not to mention the numerous working windmills that can be found in the vicinity. Nowadays Downham Market is developing as a commuter base for affluent city workers from King's Lynn, Norwich, Cambridge and Peterborough. It has a population of around 6730.
