Kendal is a town of over 27,000 inhabitants, situated in the county of Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District National Park. The town has a rich history, and several ruined castles can be found nearby, the newest of which dates back to the 12th century. The town is a chartered market town, built around a main street, with a number of courtyards leading off the street. This was formerly used as a defence against Celtic raiding parties. The town later became involved in the production of snuff and shoes, though both of these industries have ceased now. Kendal Mint Cake is still produced in the town, though. Kendal is today a shopping town for the local area, many preferring it to larger towns to the south. The nearest driving theory test centre to Kendal is located in Barrow-in-Furness, a drive of 35 miles. Kendal has its own practical test centre, which is located in Eskdale House, on Shap Road.
