Goole is a town located in the East Riding of Yorkshire, with a population of approximately 18,500. The town developed as a port serving the Selby coalfields, after the River Don was diverted northwards in 1627. This also made the Don navigable by barges, and so goods were frequently transferred at the port of Goole. Later, the Aire and Calder navigation was opened, and two decades later, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway built a line into the town, further encouraging the growth of the port and thus boosting the economy of the town. As the coalfields shut, the town suffered decline, although this was reversed with the boom in containerised shipping, and so Goole is now an important container port. The nearest driving theory test centre is located approximately 15 miles away in Scunthorpe. However, the test centre in Doncaster is a little more accessible, with a direct rail service from Goole, taking approximately 30 minutes. The nearest practical test centre is also located in Scunthorpe.
