Margate is a town on the island of Thanet, in the county of Kent. The town grew as a seaside resort, which became popular thanks to large numbers of Londoners wanting to escape the city for breaks. At one time, the town was home to 6 companies offering steamboat excursions. The steamboats ran from 1841 until 1967. Since then, Margate has seen lots of decline, as have many other seaside resorts, thanks to the advent of the package holiday and low cost flights. The town has not been helped by its theme park burning down, though the council has attempted to improve the situation by building a Turner art gallery. Margate is linked to London by both road and rail. Manston airport is nearby, though it currently offers no scheduled flights. Margate has neither a practical nor a theory test centre. The nearest theory test centre location is approximately 15 miles away in Canterbury, as is the local practical test centre.
