Over time, the town has been burnt to the ground twice; by Norman raiders in 11th century, and later in 1583, when the Great Fire of Nantwich burnt for over 20 days. Nantwich also suffered from Welsh Marauders during the 13th century. Today the town is mainly a service town, with a number of residents commuting to the nearby towns of Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent.
