Newhaven is a town in the county of East Sussex, located on the South Coast. The town was known as Meeching until the 16th century, when a storm diverted the course of the River Ouse, forming a ‘New Haven’. The town is a seaport, with ferries to Dieppe in Normandy. The port also handles industrial traffic, and is overlooked by the 19th century Newhaven Fort, which sits on Castle Hill. Newhaven has seen some commercial and industrial decline; however several regeneration programmes have attempted to reverse this, with varying degrees of success. Several large shops have pulled out of the town, citing poor management of the town itself. Newhaven lies on the railway line between Brighton and Seaford, and has two stations – Newhaven Town, and Newhaven Harbour. Newhaven has neither a theory nor a practical test centre; however the nearest centres are both located a short distance away, in Brighton. The theory centre is located less than half an mile from Brighton station.
