Oakham is a small town of approximately 10,000 inhabitants, located in the small county of Rutland. Oakham lies close to Rutland Water, one of the largest artificial lakes in the UK. Attractions in the town include its regular, historic market, as well as its castle, and the All Saints church. Inside the great hall of the castle are a number of horseshoes, which in the past were used as a form of toll. Today, the custom is enforced only during Royal Visits, when large, ornamental horseshoes are presented. The town lies on the Birmingham to Peterborough railway line, and sees services between Birmingham, Peterborough, Cambridge and Stansted Airport. The nearest driving theory test centre to Oakham is located in Leicester, approximately 20 miles away, and accessible via a 25 minute rail journey. The closest practical test centre is ten miles from Oakham, in Melton Mowbray.
