Oxford is a city, and a local government district, in the county of Oxfordshire. The city has a population of approximately 134,000 inhabitants, and is home to Oxford University, the oldest university in the English-speaking world. The city was first inhabited during Saxon times, with the foundation of a nunnery in the 8th century. The town became an important military frontier town later on, and was raided by the Danes on several occasions. The first mention of the university is in the 12th century. The town was largely missed by the industrial revolution; however it was instrumental in car production during the 20th century, with Morris Motor Company setting up in the area of Cowley. British Leyland took over Morris, however in the 1970s and 80’s, British Leyland suffered decline, and so Cowley saw huge numbers of job losses. Today, there has been a reprieve for the motor industry, as BMW now build the Mini in the area. The city is home to both a practical and a theory centre. The theory centre is located in Saint Aldates road, about a mile from Oxford Railway station. The practical centre is located in the suburb of Cowley, on James Wolfe Road.
