Skipton is a market town, situated in the Craven district of North Yorkshire. The town has a population of approximately 15,000 inhabitants. The town is home to one of the best preserved mediaeval castles in the UK. During the English civil war, the castle was one of the longest-held Royalist strongholds in the country, until its honourable surrender in December 1645. The town lies on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, which previously brought trade to the town, particularly in the textile industries. Skipton is an historic market town, and still holds its traditional open air market 4 times a week. The town was later a major railway town, with a number of locomotive works in the town. Today, the town is a service town, with a number of shops serving the community. The railway heritage has almost entirely vanished, though the town has a frequent rail service to Leeds, as well as peak services to London in addition to services to Carlisle and Morecambe. The nearest driving theory test centre is located approximately 20 miles away, in Bradford; a train journey of about 35 minutes. The town does have a practical test centre; this is located on Carleton Road.
