Southend-on-Sea is a large seaside resort, and the largest town, in the county of Essex, with a population of approximately 176,000 inhabitants. The town was originally the ‘south end’ of the village of Prittlewell, but became popular itself when Londoners discovered seaside resorts. Southend-on-Sea was a short distance from London, and easily accessible by rail, and so grew rapidly until it engulfed the village of Prittlewell. During the 20th century, the popularity of seaside resorts declined, and the town became service orientated, with shops and offices being located in the town. Southend is also a popular commuter town for London, with London Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street stations being approximately one hour away. Attractions in the town include three theatres, cinemas, a bowling alley and a casino as well as tourist attractions such as a pier (heavily damaged by fire in 2005, though since reopened and undergoing restoration), which extends over a mile into the Thames estuary. The pier has a railway along its length, and a theme park (Adventure Island) at the land-end. Southend has both a driving theory and a practical test centre. The theory test centre is located on Victoria Avenue, directly opposite Southend Victoria railway station. The towns practical test centre is on Prittlewell Chase, in the original village of Prittlewell.
