Stamford is a small town in the English county of Lincolnshire. The town has a population of 19,900. Stamford originally grew as a Danish settlement, which by the middle ages had become famous for its wool and cloth products. The city was originally walled, though only a small section of these walls remain today. The town later became an inland port, convenient for the Great North Road, though as the draught of ships increased, the use of Stamford as a port declined. Today, the town retains much of its middle aged architecture, and so the town sees filming for a number of period dramas. Stamford is also a popular tourist destination thanks to its meandering streets and narrow alleyways. A major employer in the town is nearby RAF Wittering, as well as Newage International, a maker of electrical generators. The town has a rail station, and is served by trains from Birmingham to Cambridge and Stansted Airport. The nearest theory and practical test centres are situated in Peterborough, about 10 miles away, or approximately 20 minutes by rail. The theory test centre is situated at 41 Broadway, the practical centre on Saville Road.
