Stone is a small town, with a population of just over 14,500, located in the county of Staffordshire. The town was originally the capital of early Mercia, the Anglican kingdom which once spread over much of what is now the West Midlands. Christianity arrived in Stone via the monks of Lindisfarne. The town later ceased to be capital of Mercia, and was superseded by Stafford. The town later grew as a coaching stop on the turnpike road through the area. At one time, no fewer than 38 stagecoaches visited the town every day. The turnpike is now the A34, from Birmingham to the north. Stone was also a river, and later a canal port, which brought in raw materials for the potteries of Josiah Wedgwood. Later, the railways also brought trade and growth to the town. Today, the station still exists, although it sees no stopping trains. The nearest driving theory test centre to Stone is in Stoke-on-Trent, approximately 7 miles away. There are two practical test centres, both approximately 7 miles from Stone, in Stoke-on-Trent, and in Stafford.
