Wellingborough is a town in the county of Northamptonshire, with a population of approximately 48,500 inhabitants. The town lies on the River Nene. Wellingborough was founded in the early Saxon period, with the name being formed from elements that roughly translate as "the town of the people of Waendel". The town was never particularly noteworthy during the middle ages. It was granted its market charter in 1201, and a monastery was built in the town. The town has seen modest growth, thanks to its involvement in the boot and shoe industry, as well as small scale iron and steel smelting, and chemical manufacturing. Today, Wellingborough is mainly a service town, and it has a number of distributuion centres for national chains, thanks to its central location and excellent road links. The town centre was redeveloped in the 1970s, and is home to the Swangate shopping centre. The town has no theory test centre; the closest is instead located in Northampton, approximately 7 miles away. The town does have a practical centre, however, and this is situated on the Belgrade Business Centre.
