Wisbech is town of approximately 20,000 inhabitants, in the county of Cambridgeshire. A Norman castle was built near the town by William I. The castle was later converted into an infamous Tudor prison, though it was rebuilt twice, in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 17th centuries, the citizens of Wisbech became known as the âFen Tigersâ due to their ferocious resistance to plans for draining the Fens. Despite the resistance, the plans were carried out, and they allowed Wisbech to become a prosperous inland port which handled agricultural goods. At the time, Wisbech was situated on the River Ouse, though the Ouse later silted up, causing its estuary to move north. The Rver Nene was later diverted to run through the town. The town today retains much of its original Georgian architecture, and as a result has been used in a number of period dramas. The nearest driving theory test centre to Wisbech is located in Peterborough. The town has its own practical test centre, however, and this is located in Albion House, on Albion Place.
